BBC HD

BBC HD Logo BBC HD is a dedicated high definition channel from the BBC. It broadcasts the best HD content from across their range of channels.

BBC HD only broadcasts original high definition content, and, unlike some other channels does not broadcast upscaled content.

Where content is available in HD that is being shown on BBC 1 in SD, the BBC try to simulcast it in HD on BBC HD, however occasionally, scheduling means that this can not always happen.

How to watch BBC HD

BBC HD is Free to air, and is available without subscription to either Sky TV or the Sky HD Mix/Pack. This means that all you require to watch this channel is a High Defintion set-top box.

You will find BBC HD on Sky Guide Channel 143.

History of BBC HD

BBC HD launched on 15th May 2006, but was classed by the BBC as a trial. The service started broadcasting around 6 hours per day, with the hours being extended for special events which were broadcast live, but as the World Cup and Tennis etc.

The trial initially lasted for 12 months, after which, the BBC Trust announced a Public Value Test on 21st May 2007. The trial was extended until the Public Value Test was complete. The BBC Trust announced on the 19th November 2007 that they had approved the launch of BBC HD. The channel launched as a full service on 1st December 2007.

On Monday, 16th May 2009, the BBC increased the number of hours that BBC HD broadcasts to 9 hours, which is the maximum currently allowed, as specified by the BBC Trust, with the exception of sporting or other events where the BBC will increase the hours to cover these.
